Unless they havechanged in the past couple years, they are largely exposed in the rear. Iwitnessed a horrific accident where a cherokee was rear-ended resulting in theCherokee exploding. After noting the gas tank unprotected in the back, I'vestayed away from them. If you do get one, go with the 4.0L inline 6, and amanual transmission. Chrysler does not make a decent automatic IMHO. Other thanthat, they are a capable vehicle on and off road.

If more interest is shown and the price comes within range, Iwould likely take the Jeep to my own mechanic and let him go over it for me,but I would like to have an idea in advance of what he should be looking at. cherokee jeep : I read a recent post that had to do with towing with a '98 Jeep, and I'mre-asking some things just to clarify....I have a '98 Jeep Cherokee sport without a towing package.4 Wheel Drive4.0L 6 cylAir-conditioning. I have a 20ft boat with a Gross Trailer Weight of 3000lbs...trailer hasauxiliary brakes. I went down to my local U-Haul dealer (in my area theyare supposed to be the most knowledgeable on hitches.). They said they didnot make a class III for my Jeep, but I could get a class II (rated 3500pounds). I also asked for a transmission cooler and wiring for lights.Total cost was around $300 installed. Will that be all I need? I have read a little about sway controllersand these air bags to level the jeep. Will I need these with a 3000lb, 20fttrailer? If he did, how far away wasthe gas station?We don't know what time Ron left to go to Bundy. We don't know what he did after he left the Mezzaluna Restaurant. Ron was not investigated in any great detail. He was an innocent victim who was unfortunate enough to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.Who is the owner or was the owner of the vehicle that Ron was driving? Was Rongood about replenishing the gas he used. I'll bet he was. His family says hewas a pretty nice guy and it would also be my guess that he was a very cleanmeticulous dresser.His friends could help answer these questions, if theywanted too.Due to the stream-of-consciousness way it's written, it's damn nearimpossible to find a specific nit in the book without re-reading the wholething, which I don't plan on doing lately. From what I recall off the top of my head, the car belonged to Andrea Scott,and Goldman had been using it while she was out of town. He didn't justborrow it for that night, so who the hell would possibly know if/when he mayhave put gas in it?
