chrysler engines : It's well documented that the 3.0L V6 is an oil leaker and burner with aterribly inaccessible timing belt and water pump. I'm on my third one, andit will be my last Mitsu engine. In the last 12 months I've dropped over$1200 in engine -- that's right, *engine* -- repairs on that thing and I'mnot happy about it. I'm tired of the driveway stains and the horrendousrepair bills to keep it running, although I probably will put up with it fora few more years as the rest of the van is still pretty solid and the bottomend of the motor is, in fairness, pretty bulletproof.OTOH, there's no doubt about the longevity of the older 2.2L/2.5L products(our family had two that went over 160K miles without major failure of anysort--their owners got sick and tired of the cars and sold them before theywore out). I've got no personal experience with them, but reports on the5.2L/5.9L Magnums as well as the 3.3L/3.8L engine families are extremelygood as well. It's early yet, but I've had good luck so far with my 3.2L, and that's withvirtually *no* maintenance other than oil and filter changes. It's just nowreached 73K miles and I think I'll replace the spark plugs and antifreezethis spring or summer just as a preventative measure, not because of anyoperating problem or indication of one coming. My 3.5L Intrepid was strongand still ran like new after the 65K miles it had on it--I put sparkplugsinto it once, I think. If I hadn't fallen in love with the newer bodystyle, I would've put the $1200 steering rack the car needed into it andstill be driving it today. (Really it didn't need a rack, just the mountingbushings, but you couldn't buy those separately on a '96. By the time I putthe non-engine maintenance dollars into it, it was a wash between keeping itor getting a newer car, so I got the newer car.)
chrysler engines : Yes, Chrysler engines are *very* reliable, at least as much so as anycompetitive make that I've driven or read about. The 2.7L may well be anexception, but I understand it's a maintenance issue that gets most of 'em.Frankly, a 2.7L engine in a car the size of an Intrepid is a recipe fortrouble anyway. It's going to be perpetually stressed out to move a vehiclethat size at the 80MPH speeds the freeways move at. Not to mention thestress of the stop and go quagmire that describes all urban driving now. SoI want to know where you get your information that Chrysler engines areunreliable. Now if you want to start tossing around verbiage such as 'refinement' orother such nonsense, then I suggest you stop reading the magazines and spendyour spare time maintaining your own cars -- and keep them for more than a2-year lease term. When you do, you will realize that the more complicatedand 'refined' the engine is, the more expensive and difficult it is tomaintain and work on, and the more likely you are to have problems with it. chrysler engines : I used to have an Intrepid with the 3.5. I always revved it 'cause ithought it sounded cool, but all my friends thought it sounded like crap. It's nice to see someone agrees with me!I've always thought that Steve's hearing was a bit off. :)"Josh Weigner" wrote inmessage ...Same here. Iinterpret CU's comments on Chrysler's recent engines to include avibration that can felt through the body and perhaps the gas pedal. Comment such as "harsh sounding", "feels strained" etc..I had a Buick V6 like this. No lack of power in the small bodySomerset I was driving but the engine felt and sounded like it wasworking pretty hard. It finally let go at 150k when the timing chainfailed. Shame on me for not realizing GM was building interferenceengines way back when. :-( My 1970 Chrysler New Yorker was another animal entirely. 440-4barrel,very quiet, refined and responsive in normal driving. On occasion Iwould open it up and the car would accelerate in a muffled roar thatbelied it's enormous power. Damn I miss that beast! :-) chrysler engines : I suspect that for certain model years, a VW-designed and built 1.7 L fourcylender was used on Dodge Omnis and Plymoth Horizons. Does anyone know ifthis is true? I suspect for two reasons:1. I've heard this rumor often.2. You just can't kill those old Omni engines!-J--- (Guildenstern)Geoffrey B. Avila Oct 12,2112 (c) TempleVision. All rights reserved.True. VW sold 1.7 liter engines to Chrysler for Omnis and Horizons. Theengines were carbureted only. Cheers,Ken Lawton--I believe it was the 1980-81 1.7L Chrysler engine. Greg Raven's book says it is stamped "1.7" on the back of the block, while the VW block is stamped "H". They are identical, except that the Chrysler doesn't have the mounting pads for the A/C compressor machined. My little brother owned a 1981 Horizon TC3 with this engine, and was always borrowing my tools and service manual to work on it. The intake manifold is a popular performance item for those with the VW engine who want to put a carburator on their car.My 78 Horizon had one and it for power andit had my problems in it lifewater pumpaltoverheatedthe rack went bad chrysler engines : This was all under 100K milesMaybe VW just made the motor block! This comes up from time to time, which surprises me (I thought it was commonknowledge). Yes, for several years, VW supplied 1.7 liter motors for thoseb> applications. They were all carbed. I only know for sure that in 78, their maiden year, Chrysler used aVW/Audi engine very similar to pre fuel injection Rabbit engines. Infact, if the chrysler lean burn crap were pulled off, and a 1974Rabbit distributor used, the engine would run much more happily thanit did off the showroom floor. The transmission, clutch, etc, wereall VW/Audi as well, but again not exactly the same units used incontemporary Rabbits.I have a similar question about these Omnis. My friend's neighbor isparting out an Omni, I don't know what year. I'd like to get thealternator, power steering pump, and I guess anything else that I couldget for cheap, just in case I have problems down the road. Does anyoneknow how many Omni parts will fit an '83 Rabbit with fuel injection, p/s,a/c?
