chrysler marine : My friend has a Penn Yann with twin 360 cid Chrysler Marine engines. The left-side exhaust hose on the starboard engine was just about burned through when he bought it. Now it is close to burning through again, even after he rebuilt the raw water pump and then replaced the exhaust outlets and hoses. The engine is running at the appropriate temperature, and there seems to be plenty of water running out the exhaust. (Measures the same as the port engine, which has no problem). This engine has fresh-water cooled exhaust manifolds plumbed into the fresh-water cooling system after the thermostat. Fresh water circulates through the engine first, then through the exhaust manifolds, then throught the heat exchanger. Raw water flows from the thru-hull, then the strainer, through the transmission cooler, then through the pump,through the heat exchanger, then through and out the exhaust outlets with a branch off to the shaft packing gland. Both engines are plumbed identically, yet the starboard engine exhaust is 75 to 100 degrees hotter than the port exhaust. Fuel mixture in all cylinders is excellent, judging from the color of the spark plugs. The bottom of the exhaust outlets (which, by the way, are below the water line) is cool to the touch, while the tops are too hot to touch; softening the exhaust hose.
chrysler marine : Check the size of the hose you are using! I have seen a lot of caseswith Chrysler installations where people replace the original 3 1/8"exhaust hose with 3". This causes the hose to squeeze tightly aroundthe iron diffusers thus robbing the area directly behind the diffusersof water. This causes burned hoses! Just a thought assuming you havechecked the obvious: plugged passages at the top of the mixing elbow.JohnBad riser causing a restriction on that side. Seeing you did not mentionthe engine runs hot tells me enough flow is there for the heat exchanger.If the paint is burned off the riser is a good indication of restriction.The riser can be removed and rodded out. Chryslers are notorious forthis as the riser jackets are rather small. Somebody should install clear hoses on the rawwater and fresh water sides of the system to see if there are air bubbleor lack of flow.
