chrysler town and country : Best Looking Van on the road but always breaking down. The bolt shearedright off on the tension pulley while my wife was in the bank parkinglot. I realize that you don't need power steering while driving down thehighway but I also feel if it went while she was turning a corner andshe lost her power steering she may have had an accident. Yesterday therear view mirror fell off the windshield and is hanging by the wire...Over $2500 has gone into the 1996 LXI Chrysler Town & Country Minivansince I purchased it for $30,000 in March of '96. They've replaced thefront end twice..bushings, sway bars, etc. I'm on the third battery....Two new tires in front with less than 20,000 miles on them also new rearbrakes at 20,000. Windshield wipers come on and off when they feel likeit. Transmission cooler lines leaking... fixed twice. When tensionpulley was replaced they told me that the water pump was leaking andreplaced it... Car has been out of warranty since last March. I think Iwill get this mirror fixed and then see about trading it in on a HondaOdyssey. I tried to buy American.. My wife had a Volvo before and infifteen years the only thing that I had to replace was the alternatorand the timing chain. I had a 1972 Dodge Van that I bought new for $5200and put 172,000 miles on it and the only real trouble was u-joints... OhWell.. Thanks For Listening. ~ Don
chrysler town and country : The operative issue sounds like the TENSION PULLEY shering off. Can you thinkof anything which you could have done to prevent the TENSION PULLEY blowing?I feel your pain. I just traded in a 92 Caravan that had been back 92 timesfor major service for a 96 Town & Country LXI. This used car was selectedbecause I could not get a Honda van and my wife no longer wanted to drivethe Caravan. The 96 is perfect so far but for the fact that the gas tankonly takes about 12 gal. Folks here told me about the TSB issued by Chrysleron this issue and the fact that an improved tank is available. I calledChrysler yesterday asking for support and I was told to drop dead since itwas out of warranty. My selling dealer said they would cover it under myused car warranty. Honda apparently has a program in place to fix qualityissues raised by its customers out of warranty, apparently Chrysler doesnot.Do you know of anyone else or where to find information on the 1992Dodge Caravan? My uncle's Caravan caught fire the other day, with him,his wife, and three kids in the car. I found a recall listing atconsumerreports.com, but I was wondering if you would be willing toshare any documentation you might have, or knew of any information hemight find useful. He's had significant problems with his 92 Caravan, and is looking for as much information on similar problems as possible. Thanks in advance. chrysler town and country : Do you know of anyone else or where to find information on the 1992Dodge Caravan? Fuel lines CAN and DO get damaged and leak, hoses DO get old on 8-9 year old vehicles. And if it is of any comfort to you, I have seen Hondas and Toyotas, and even (can you believe this?) German cars in flames at the side of the road with the former occupants standing 300 feet away.---------------------------------------- ----Kodiak Services CompanyLighting Design - Lighting Energy AuditsConcord California USAkodiak at value dot net------------------------------------- -------Happened to me in my Saab Turbo because of an overheated converter meltingthe wires just located over the converter. At least my 92 Caravan always gotme to where I was going, even if the air conditioning or transmission didnot work as intended. chrysler town and country : Bolt shearing off at tension pulley is not uncommon. It happened to medriving down the road at 25 mph. Obviously there is something wrong herewith the design and or materials used in this tension pulley. How manywrecks do you suppose there have there been because of this tension pulleydefect? Of course, this is a "wear" item and is not covered by thewarranty. The rear view mirror fell off a long time ago maybe at 20K miles. I've had some new bushings put on, 1 new battery, brakes replaced. I don'tseem to have much problem with the windshield wiper ghost. Haven't had thetransmission cooler lines leaking problem. I've also had the tranny rebuilt after I backed out of the garage onemorning and noticed a 1.5' diameter puddle of transmission fluid on thefloor. I had heard about Chrysler's prior problems with van transmissionsand had purchased the 7 yr / 100 k extended warranty at the time ofpurchase. If you plan on keeping it I would suggest looking into buying awarranty extension. I have the towing package and have never towedanything.I also have a 96 T&C LXI with a lot of problems. I only have 35K miles on it with all kinds of trans problems. The water pump has been replaced, rear brakes at 20K, new serpentine belt, A/C problems galore, etc. The latest is two weeks ago I had to get the front brakes replaced and right after replacement the car started to have a banging sound in the front end when stopping and starting. They now tell me I need new tie rod ends and the car is out of the 3 year/36K warranty (3 years) but under 36K and the extended CHRYSLER warranty I bought for an additional $1500+ does not cover tie rod ends-can you believe that. I missed the 3 year by less than 1 week. What damned good is the extended warranty if it does not cover basic items such as tie rods??---------------------------DONALD HESS wrote in message ...Best Looking Van on the road but always breaking down. It hasbeen flawless and I still have tread left on the Michelins. Sorry but I bet there are many people with noproblems because I see nothing but Caravans and T&C's around.
