Andits unlikely to work with a lower priced brand like Nissan. Butits the only technique the Mercedes people know.Chrysler doesn't have any techniques for nurturing and preservingbrand name value. In fact, they don't even acknowledge itsimportant.At one time, Chrysler and Dodge were more than ordinary brands.But no more.For 40 years, they put the Chrysler nameplate on models thatshould have been Plymouths. Every time they did, they cashedin part of the Chrysler brand name value for a short term salesadvantage.With Dodge, they instituted parts commonality with Plymouth.It was quite a fall for Dodge to be considered "just anotherPlymouth.They've depleted Chrysler and Dodge brand name value to that ofordinary brands. And they've nearly destroyed their ordinarybrand, Plymouth.With this sort of brand value mismanagement, Nissan's fallwouldn't have stopped at Isuzu. The only question is wouldthe brand have been killed at Hyundai level or Kia level.

Chrysler was a lot more profitable ($4.3billion versus Daimler's $2.4 billion in net income) plus Chrysler earnedmore with fewer employees (higher productivity) this is also on about thesame sales (both companies in the $70 billion range).Chrsyler is more profitable and Daimler stuffs the management board with 4Germans and one American. What a rip! Dividends will be paid in D-Marks. Well we heard all the whining that Mercedes wanted a Schumacher or maybe NickHeidfeld and BMW wants Ralf in a Williams. Then I want am American in aMcLaren-Daimler/Chrysler.Look out DC. If BMW and Mercedes can bitch and moan about having a Germandriver, then I want an American. It does not have to be right away but let'sget some youngsters in F3 or F3000. No I don't want Sandy and Michael. I amnot sure if David Donohue, Alex Gurney or Phil Hill's kid are up to it butthey need to get a few young Americans in F3 and F3000 to see if they can cutit. I want it totally on merit but Daimler-Chrysler will be selling a lot ofcars and making a lot of money in the States.

I think Chrysler may have felt this was a good deal forthe company.I think you are being a bit harsh on the RAM and other Chryslet vechicles. They are not Mercs but a Ram will hold up longer than 30,000 miles. Chrysler's V-8 and rear drive power trains, in the past, had the reputationfor holding up very well. You also have millions of Chrysler mini-vansrunning around the U.S. and Chrysler still holds the dominant share of themarket. If their stuff was so bad, they would not have repeat buyers. Ipersonally think Ford is the premier auto manufacturer in the U.S.. CertainGM products like some Buicks are also very good.

I findmy car to be quieter, with quicker acceleration and better gasmileage.It interests all NASCAR fans (as they all remember the glory of theMOPAR days), but Chrysler has said they aren't going to return toNASCAR. They don't feel they can race a car they don't produce (ie. abig RWD V8).How modern? I've driven in mid-80's Honda's and they don't seem thatquiet. Though, of course, I'm now comparing apples to oranges (amid-80's engine to a mid-90's engine).The 2.0L or 2.2L Neon engine? I guess I should have specified that.I have the 2.0L SOHC gas-mileage Neon engine (with a standardtransmission). Under the plan devised byHyundai, Hyundai would own 20% of Daewoo, and Daimler-Chrysler wouldown 40%. Althoughall signs point to the acquisition of Daewoo, Daimler-Chrysler'shistory is that common sense prevails at the last minute.Daimler-Chrysler's previous plan to buy Nissan was aborted aftera former Chrysler executive commented that they might as well write*Nissan* on $8,000,000,000 worth of gold bullion and dump it in thePacific Ocean. And an acquisition of Daewoo looks like even a worse decision.Daimler-Chrysler clumsily aborted the Nissan deal by saying itwould instead concentrate on consolidating its mini-empire. Yetover a year later, it has made no progress.Perhaps some outside help would benefit Daimler-Chrysler.
