gmc diesel : Personally I strongly recommend dual rear wheels. I think all 350's and upare dually's.Send me an e-mail if you would like to discuss this off group.-----------== Posted via Deja News, The Discussion Network ==---------- Search, Read, Discuss, or Start Your OwnI am happy with my Powerstroke and this is my second one. I tow aHoliday Rambler alumascape 29RKS with two slides. I have a 98 2500 dodge diesel extend cab, 8' bed, automatic transmission,4:10 rear end. I pull a 33.5' Prowler, dry weigh 8800#. When not towing Iget 19.6 MPG, when towing I get 13.5 MPG. With the 3.56 rear you will dobetter. I use the 4:10 because all my towing is not done in flat land andwould like to take the mountains at a reasonable rate of speed. Noweverybody has their take on diesels. I have heard that there may be one outthere that beats the Cummins for performance, but it sure ain't thepowerstroke in the ford, and the one in GMC trucks is a complete laugh. Ifyou want a real bunch of good technical advice go to alt.autos.dodge.trucks.There are several guys who can lead you to some sites which give testingresults, of the three brands, which were done by a ford dealer, and he isstill taking heat for his results. He did not skew his tests, and dodgetook it in all categories. The number I have given you were for 3 trips I have taken with my truck, since I got in June of last year. Two of the trips were with the trailerand one without.

gmc diesel : Announcing the all new GMC-Diesel.com Website!!!This website has information about GMC Diesel engines, new and old.It also has pictures, and information about the upcoming Duramaxengine!!!I'm sorry but I still will take the cummins I have never had a problem withthe 2 5.9's in my boat or the 5.9 in my 90 dodge. The new GMC diesel looksnice but it is a V8 and it only makes 65 more horses and 60 more lb ft oftorque at a higher RPM then a STOCK built down dodge cummins, where as thecummins power is at a lower RPM. The I6 5.9's in my Boat are rated at 310horses and 580 lb feet and thats out of a 6 cylinder!! But I will give it achance when they come out I might just have to get one if they are any goodbut that cummins is hard to beat.I tend to agree, the laws of physics around the way a V8 runs basicallymakes it a midrange torque engine. I am a Diesel MEchanic by trade and Ipersonally feel the only reason that anyone makes a V8 Diesel is that eitherthey dont believe they can sell anything but a V8 in a truck, or they likeworking in cramped quarters on overly complicated machinery. Ever since the5.7 came out in the late seventies, the American light diesel market hasbeen trying to recover from the damage. Unfortunately, all they managed toproduce was a seemingly never ending series of blunders. All I need to do ina room of mechanics to get groans, grumbles, and plain old belligerence ismention the 7.3 or the 6.2. The only good Diesel is a proven Diesel. TheCummins 5.9 6BT with either the Bosch VE or the Bosch Inline injector pumpsis the ONLY way to go. All the rest are pretenders.I personally liike much of what I see that they have done with the Duramax, hopefully it wont have all the cavitation and head gasket problems that thePowerstroke has and wont eat three injector pumps in three months like the6.5 was known for doing.K.I.S.S. The 6BT s the only one Id buy. (12 valve, I want my engine to beable to be worked in by me if it does break. Diesels dont need computers torun, they just need good fuel.)

gmc diesel : I agree with both of your posts, but I believe that the reason that the 6.6is V8 is because of the inherent smoothness that comes from a balanced V8.In a passenger truck, this is a good thing. The Cummins is a great motor, but it's roots are industrial, and for someonelooking for both power and refinement, they should be finding it in theDuramax. Remember that the other part of this equation is the AllisonAutomatic. It may be awhile until this combination is surpassed. And, the Cummins is rated at 235 hp and 460 lbs/ft of torque right out ofthe box. I have heard some usages though of upwards of 350 hp, but in thetruck, specs are as follows: Duramax Cummins hp 300 @ 3100 rpm 235 @ 2500 rpmlb-ft 520 @ 1800 rpm 460 @ 1600 rpmVery close specs. I do hope, for GM's sake that the Isuzu holds up. Withthe diesel experience of the Isuzu it should, but time will tell if they cango 300,000 miles like a Cummins. All this is moot, in my case, as I always go big block, and cannot wait forthe new 8.1l gaspot!More so when the crank is a right 180 degree version than the common 90degree..just look at Seatek.

gmc diesel : So your a Diesel mechanic by trade and canīt handel 4 valve technology..sorry to say but your time has gone. 4 and 5 valvers are the norm ineurope today and noone needs those big heavy piece of shits that aredesigned in US...Even the 3116 Caterpillar is seriusly underdeveloped andunreliable.Although Cat has had a good rep it better stay to clothes soon.Mika TamminenRace car fabricator and mechanicMickey AutomotivePS seriusly neglected site at the moment.Wow, I certainly didnt expect a flame for not liking top work oncomputerised technology diesels. Four valves are fine and good on a companytruck, but for my personal vehicle I like to have something that can berepaired on the trail without requiring a tow truck and a scan tool. Foryour information I am more than competent with the computerised wonder shitsfrom Europe...as a matter of fact, in the boats I work on, out of over fortyengine R&R jobs we did over the summer season, 38 were Volvo computerisedengines, the other two were a 3208 and a Perkins 165. Both of those engineswere over 18 years old and still ran. The Volvos were dropping like fliesfrom broken cranks and cracked heads. As a matter of fact the computerised 24 valve Cummins 6BT is a very goodengine, but in my field, proven is the only way to go, and until this engineproves itself and that it is capable of being worked, I would much rathertake the old proven engines any day.Mika, stick to the race cars, you dont think like a Diesel wrench, and untilyou have worked in the trade in my area (Alaska) you have no idea what I amtalking about and therefore are unfit to judge me or my opinions.Keep working on your English, youre learning, but you still need to learngrammar along with manners.

gmc diesel : You might check on your map where Finland is located before you start arealflame troll.....Finland is a tad norther I believe where you are located at.No definitely I donīt even want to think like a Diesel mechanic like youmake it to sound ( relies on 100 year of old techonlogy that has to berepaired on the road)Iīll take my scan tool with me and put it to good work and make things worklike Dieseling the Don Johnsons personal boat ( Wellcraft 38 Scarab KV)thatwas used in the TV series Miami Vice. And yes it does perform as good orbetter as the old reliable 454īs....From our experience here the Cat 3116 is letting people down specially onthe electrical part and here we think american electrics are just as bad asenglish, french or italian. And yes I agree Volvos suck too...always have always will (you knowSwedes..they canīt even get their fighter planes to stay in the air...) ansSAAB is not at all better.Finland is known among other things for building Porsches (Boxsters) andNokia .Stick to German or Seatek Offshore diesels if you want some performance outof high tech.Remember an offshore boat here in the Baltic with less than 600 h.p. Dieselpower is a yawn....and gas costs 5$ a gallon, marine Diesel only 2.5$.
