gmc van : I'm assuming I'm posting to the correct group. If I'm not, pleaseexcuse me. I've recently purchased a 1988 GMC van, 3/4 ton, 305, FI. After warmingup, it has an extreme lack of power in acceleration. The computerreports a code 45 (oxygen sensor detects rich fuel mixture). Lookingover the service record, the MAP sensor was replaced twice withoutfixing the problem. A tune up (including distributor, plugs, wires, fuel filter, etc.) was also performed producing no results. Any ideas, conjectures, guesses, as to the problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all..From: ()Subject: Re: '88 GMC Van Acceleration problems Newsgroups: Date: 1998/02/02 Could easily be a cooked cat converter; rich mixtures turn them intoincinerators. If it's the converter, FIX THE CAUSE, then replace the converter.Midas, et.al., won't replace converters free when your engine kills 'em. I had the same problem with my 87 Chevy truck with a 350 ci throttle body injected engine. I replaced the EGR (which was indeed leaking), oxygen sensor and coolant temp sensor with no change in the problem. I tested votage from the throttle position sensor, MAP sensor and a few other things I can't remember off hand. Everything checked out fine. Eventually I noticed that one of the plug wires was bad and replaced the entire set. That fixed the problem.

gmc van : I have an 89 GMC Van V6 - 4.3L. Body in great condition but a few other problems. The two red warning lights came on Friday - P & I with red circles around them. The mechanic said to check break fluid which we did - the rear one was down - refilled itbut the lights are still burning brightly.1. What are they trying to tell me? I do not have the manual for the van.The service engine light is also burning brightly. I just replaced the resistor for the heater switch. I only had OFF and High speed on the heater panel.I now have all three - low, med and high. The amount of air seemed to increase but theheater is only luke warm. 2. Would a new thermostat get me hotter air??? I'm freezin'.I picked up some small bulbs for the instrument panel - speedometer etc. Can I get at them by taking off the plastic cover that houses the dials? I need to more light at night - too dim to read.Your ECM <computer> is telling you one of the monitored components is FUBAR. Go to to read all about it. The site contains info on how to pull DTC's <diagnostic trouble codes> from the ECM as well as a chart to interpret them. Pull the codes and post back, I'd be happy to decipher them for ya.

gmc van : I'm not "mechanically literate" but it's time I learned how to performbasic mechanical work and preventive mantenance on his car. Before turning the first bolt, it seems I'm confronted with problems. Yourcombined advice and consul would therefore be deeply appreciated.SUBJECT VEHICLE: 1983 GMC Van, 350 CID, 5.0 LTR, with Air/C andP/Steering.BACKGROUND:: The thermostat housing is secured to the engine block by 1)a 9/16 bolt on one side and 2) a 9/16th stud on the other side. Inaddition to securing the water inlet housing in place, he stud supports a"L" bracket mount for the A/C motor. PROJECT: I want to replace the thermostat. The vehicle is running coldand I want to do this before replacing the water pump, which is next onthe list.I successfully removed the bolt on one side butfound the 9/16th hex nut on the stud side to be frozen in place. For thelast couple days I have been liberally spraying it with a penetrant butno success so far in loosening it with a simple socket wrench. I wouldlove to add a torque bar to the socket wrench and really give it a turn. But basic instinct suggests I give that a little more thought first.
