jeep body parts : I spent the evening thinking about it, and then looking through catalogsfor replacement bodys, so that I could replace that icky 'glass body witha steel body. It was then, while tripping through Eden, that I cameacross the Serpent of the Garden: Steel Horse. They seem to be the onlycompany out there that manufactures replacement steel bodies for the CJ-5.Knowing how badly they are hated here for shoddy workmanship thatprematurely rusts out, I am pondering the following enigmas: Is there anyway to keep their steel replacement bodies from rusting? If I orderedsaid body parts, could I take them to a rust proofer to have themrust-proofed? They claim the parts come pre-primed. Would it be aneffective anti-rusting strategy to sand-blast or grind their body parts toshiny metal, and then apply a REAL rust-inhibiting primer, or would theSerpent called Steelhorse bite me in the rear anyway?I believe J.C. Whitney also sells steel replacement bodies for Jeeps. Ilike what folks are doing with Duracoat as a rust pre-venter these daystoo. If I were replacing my body again, and I might I would coat theunderside completly with a polyurethane similar to Duracoat, or Rhino. Iam even considering coating the outside with these materials as well.Rust wouldn't have a chance.
jeep body parts : If you had bought a CJ-7, you could put a galvanized Wrangler body onit. Thanks everyone for the advice. The 'glass body is pretty scruffed up,but I'd still want to replace it anyway, strictly as a matter of personalaesthetics, because for me a fiberglass body on a CJ is sort of like a90-pound weakling trying to impress everyone by wearing a muscle suit. For me, it's just not the same. It sounds like the emerging strategy is to remove the factory-appliedprimer back down to metal, and then apply a GOOD primer, then a GOOD paintjob. The remaining question I have comes from Jprtist. On a recent episode of _Shadetree Mechanic_, one of the two guys' had thebed of his pickup truck sprayed with a "bed liner" compound. Is what youare recommending the same thing?Yes, Rhino coat is the most popular hire somebody to spray on bedliner. It is very nice, and very expensive to have done.Durabak is a similar product that is available to the do-it-yourselfer,but can have very professional results. It is a single componentpolyurethane, mixed with recycled tire rubber. It is available in manycolors. It is very thick and very hard. It can be brushed on or sprayed. It is not cheap, but it is considerably cheaper than having somebody doRhino coat. jeep body parts : Durabak is being used to coat entire Jeeps and other 4X4's, guys aredoing the frame in one color, the underside of the body in another, theinterior and outer surfaces too. The Durabak site has lots of coolpictures. I may even use some to coat the floor of my shower in mybasement. They will also send you a free "chip" so you can get the ideaas to the texture and toughness of the product. I got a chip, and wasunable to distinguish it from Rhino liner.Durabak costs about 120 bucks per gallon at 4WD Hardware. The company islocated in Aurora Colorado, (or is it Arvada?), can't remember for sure. There is another do it yourself polyurethane and rubber product calledHerculiner or something like that, it costs about one hundred bucks pergallon, enough to do a Jeep interior with a little left over, but itonly comes in black while the Durabak comes in many colors.I came across one photograph of a Kevlar body in a catalogue, and it stilldidn't make my heart beat like the thought of a fully-restored steel bodyCJ-5. I know I'm getting too sentimental as I advance into middle age(being 41), but there's something about a metal body on a CJ that justdoesn't come through any other way. jeep body parts : (1) Has anyone replaced a windshield on a CJ7 ? Is it pretty straightforward or shall I just call an auto glass place and have them do it ?(2) Any recommendations on a reputable body parts store on the web ? Thereare several 'stores' I have used with relative good luck but am wondering ifany of you have experience (pro or con) with using places likequadratec.com, 4wd.com or jeepautobodypartstore.com specifically for Jeepbody parts ?My only suggestion on purchases is to price match. I know that 4wd.com willprice match Quadratec as long as Q has it in stock. On the windshield replacement... I looked last week on and saw a number of links for windshieldreplacement. You will find different theories... some think thewindshield gasket should be use by itself. Others say you should use a beadof silicone around the windshield to 'help' prevent leaks. Also, I wouldcall around and get prices for the replacement. You might find it costeffective to pay someone $75-$100 to put the new one in... as opposed tostruggling with it for hours or even days.I did it in 1993. You have to use a new rubber gasket and put some diluteddish soap on everything to put it together. I was real easy and I'd neverdone it before! I followed the directions in my Chiltons or Haynes manual.Never used RTV to seal it and had many years of leak free Chicago use beforeselling it to move to California.(Where I promtly bought a rust-free CJ.)RichI got the rubber from JC Whitney, which I recommend against unless you livenear Chicago and can get to the store. The glass came from a junk yard asdid the frame. jeep body parts : Hello All- I am pricing out replacement body parts for my '93 YJ and I waswondering if anyone has used any of these parts. Just looking for anopinion of quality/price. ThanksWindshield Frame from Quadratec for $139.95Steel Tailgate from Quadratec for $119.95Both Side Panels from Collins Brothers Jeep Parts on Yahoo for $165.00/eachThere are some bad aftermarket windshield frames out there. I got oneand have heard of several others. The stamp isn't true and the drivers side wiper doesn't sit squarewith the frame. It is so close to being messed up, it causes thelinkage to bind up if the blade gets tugged on while washing thewindshield with a squeegie. When you buy one look real close at the line of the stamp out for thedrivers side wiper. If not square with the rest, you have troublecoming.I put a large stainless washer inside mine to pull it square again andhave been good for a year or so.Mike86/00 CJ7 Laredo, 33x9.5 BFG Muds, 'glass nose to tail88 Cherokee 235 BFG AT'sCanadian Off Road Trips Photos: Updated Jan. 18, 02.5 Day Canadian Bush 2002 New Year's Jeep Run
