jeep bumpers : FYI, someone backed sideays into my Grand Cherokee and sheered off the front bumper. I was very suprised to learn that the inside of the bumper is hollow. How is that for quality. Trucks aren't required to have the same bumpers as cars....the hollowbumpers on the G/C saves about 100 pounds. From the issue you state,if the bumper was "sheared" off, it really wouldn't matter what was inside.What happened in my situation is not the point. The question is whether hollow bumpers provide the same level of protection as is provided in other cars not separately classified. The weight factor is, of course, important, but there may be an unacceptable tradeoff. A car might also be lighter without brakes but that would not be answer. Why do cars not classfied as Jeeps/trucks have bumpers which are not hollow ? Surely they could be lighter as well by reducing the quality of the bumpers as well. Maybe it is not as safe and the different classification of vehicles is a way to cut costs at the expense of safety.
jeep bumpers : I am looking into getting tubular front and rear bumpers for my Jeep. Ilooked at the Mopar ones but they are extremely expensive (as usual!), Ihave looked at some in other catalogues, are they as good. I understandit can be tough to mount things on the tube bumbers, like front license platesor fog lights.Get one made by a welding shop. I used 3" pipe and threaded the ends.I put my tow chain, in and screwed end caps on. They come in various configurations, and they aren't exactlycheap, but I can't see how you'd break 'em. Or even BEND 'em.I hit a rock offroad with my front one, going maybe 10 mph, and my Jeep STOPPED. The bumper didn't even have a dent. They don't come chromed, just powdercoated, and that should tellyou something. Oh yeah, they don't use plastic anything, like somesmitty-something bumper. And Jim Boswell is an off-road god ofinformation,and he usually doesn't mind giving out free advice, if it's on yournickel.They've got them for all Jeeps, and some Land Cruisers, and they've gotfronts and rears.I beg to differ. :) The best, toughest bumpers I've *EVER* seen on ANYvehicle (including military!) are made by Ricard Engineering of Placentia,California. These are more than bumpers; they're off-road survival units. The only thing they don't have is an engine and wheels. Front bumper: - 2 30-cal-ammo-can-sized locking compartments for winch stuff - brush guard (covers entire fender area) made of rollcage tubing - winch mount (recessed inside of bumper) - tow bar - light tabs (recessed inside of brush guard) - snatch-strap hooks - all load-bearing parts made of 1/4" or 1/2" steel (yes, 1/2"!) jeep bumpers : Rear bumper: - swing away tire holder for 33" tire (larger sizes avail.) - swing away gas can mount; holds 3 5-gallon Jerry cans - 20"x15" basket for stuff - HUGE locking compartment that goes the width of the vehicle (7"x7") - built-in taillights/reverse lights - class 3 hitch recessed into bumper - tow hooks - all load-bearing parts made of 1/4" or 1/2" steel or rollcage tubingI've been doing car-related stuff for many years, and this set of bumpers isthe most impressive and well-built pair of things that I've ever laid eyeson, hands down. I waited 6 months for them to be custom-built for my Jeep,and it was worth it. The front bumper was about $650 and the rear bumperabout $750. They come in plain steel (you paint), powder, or chromed. Lookat the Turtle Expedition notes if you need the address; Chuck Rickard didthe bumpers for that vehicle.
