jeep cherokee sport : My latest solution was to hook up a bunch of L.E.D.s to the computerto check the signals it is getting while driving down the road. Byseeing which light goes out, I could narrow down my search (spark, fuel, power, etc.). I hooked the LED lights up to the 12v powerconnections to the ECU (switched and un-switched), and the ECU wire tothe coil, and the ECU wire to the #3 injector (because it was theeasiest wire to splice into of all six injectors). The jeep wouldn'tstart for me this morning, but all the lights were on while I washaving the problems. Are there any other sensors that I should be checking? How likely isit that the crank position sensor wiring harness (to the ECU) is bad? What kind of voltage should I be seeing from the CPS at the ECU? Anyother recommendations?I've got too much money in this thing to sell it now. I really enjoydriving it, but with the problems I'm having, I'm getting reallyfrustrated. On 14 Oct 2002 07:15:09 -0700, the following appeared inrec.autos.makers.jeep+willys, posted by (Wes K.):Just a thought, but AFAIK if the ECU hasn't beendisconnected you shouldn't be getting this code by itself. Idon't have wiring diagrams for a '92, but it's barelypossible that this *is* your problem; the ECU could beintermittently losing power due to a bad connection at somepoint. Like I said, just a thought...
jeep cherokee sport : "Evidence confirming an observation isevidence that the observation is wrong." - McNamelessI fought mine for several months and the two things that did the most for me were to REALLY clean the throttle body - I finally pulled it and soaked it out - and the O2 sensor. The CPS was most of my problem with dying while driving but the throttle body and O2 fixed the dying at a stop sign or at idle. That also fixed a tendency to 'buck' in low speed/light load situations like idling along in 4L.As Mike Romaine likes to point out, it could also be the engine and body ground connections since it seems to be erratic. This may also result in different behavior when it's wet out as opposed to dry weather. With a computer, the millionth of a second of power loss because of aloose connection, etc will not be visible to you on a led but itcertainly will be visible to the computer and very likely will cause areset...or glitch. In other words, just because you can't see the LEDflash, a power loss of enough duration could occur to effect thecomputer. jeep cherokee sport : Check all the ground straps on the engine..... Our 96 XJ started with amiss while driving. One day it started to cut out and then it died. Itwould crank all day long, but never fire...Had it towed, the guy said thecomputer was dead and the dealer would have to repair it. Another tow andthe dealer checked it out.....A $27 ground strap cost me a few hundreddollars in tows and rental car fees.. Just something simple to check andmaybe save ya some money.Pat--To reply, remove the "NOSPAM" in the reply address."Road Toad" wrote in message...With a computer, the millionth of a second of power loss because of aloose connection, etc will not be visible to you on a led but itcertainly will be visible to the computer and very likely will cause areset...or glitch. Head of the list for the 93 ZJ is the ABScomputer connector. It sits right where the hood drains onto it. :/As for fuse/wiring I suggest you get the Jeep service book. A coupleof repairs and it pays for itself.Check the ground strap from the engine to the firewall. Ours was rottenand had the same intermittent problem as yours. I only changed the CPSbefore I spotted it...There are a pile of relays there and any one of them could cause a cutout if their connections are corroded. I would check them all and allthe fuses seeing as they are open to weather.I also think code 12 means 'start of codes' on a 92, not no ECM signal,(that was older ones) doesn't it? Same as 55 is end of codes.Mike86/00 CJ7 Laredo, 33x9.5 BFG Muds, 'glass nose to tail88 Cherokee 235 BFG AT'sI checked my Haynes manual last night, and it said that code 12 was"Battery Disconnected" for the 1991 - 1997 models.Gas filter is new. (One of those things I replaced and then forgot tomention). For what it's worth, the Cherokee has been running better. It hasn'tdied, sputtered, or taken a while to start for about a week now (sincelast weekend when I hooked up my test lights). At the same time Ihooked up the test lights, I also visually inspected the fuses andprongs on the relays for oxidation. Maybe pulling them out and thenreinstalling was enough to make a better contact? I'll pull them outthis weeknd and buff them with an emery cloth to clean them better. jeep cherokee sport : I'm considering purchasing a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport or Country model. I'd like to hear opinions from owners on their experiences. Good or Bad!I'm most interested in Handling, gas mileage, reliability and comfort. You can E-mail me at THANKS!!I recently took delivery on a 96 Country (with Off-road or "Up-Country" suspension) and so far I love it! You probably alreadyknow that the main differences between the Sport and Country modelsare in the body and interior trim, and the Country has more standardequipment (and a higher price). If you prefer the more "up-scale" lookand the automatic transmission, get the Country. If you like manualtransmission and a more basic look, the Sport is the one.So far, I've had little to complain about. Handling has been surprisingly good, especially for a car with almost 11 inches ofrunning ground clearance. It obviously doesn't corner like a sportscar, but it does much better than my last car, an Isuzu Trooper. Steering is very good, and it has a fairly tight turning radius. Itglides pretty smoothly over small bumps. Gas mileage, after 2000 miles, is about 20 mpg over mostly rural roads (slightly higher on theopen highway). I haven't had it long enough to comment personally onreliability. Although Consumer Reports has historically rated Jeepslow on reliability, two of my neighbors have had Cherokees for yearswith few problems. As for comfort, the seats in my car are fine, although they can't approach the comfy Captain's chairs in my RV. Thestandard seats in the Country model are a step up from the standardseats in the Sport model, although you can upgrade, and leather seatsare available (personally, I don't like leather). Leg room on thedriver's side, however, is somewhat limited due to the high transmission hump. This is not a problem for me, at 5'8", but mightcause some taller people to feel a little cramped. Consider gettingthe anti-lock brakes as an option, especially if you live in an areathat gets a lot of ice and snow, or a lot of gravel roads. Thedifference in handling and stability under difficult conditions isremarkable! Oh, and the full-time 4WD (Select-trac) is a must. I driveon it all the time, so I'm ready for almost anything (includingperfectly dry roads).
