(I should have found it sooner and I have to admit thatI didn't really start looking until I got AS MAD AS I AM NOW, but Iguess good things can come out of anything).Anyway, I have a '94 Wrangler for which I opted to get the 7/70powertrain warranty rather than the 3/36 "unlimited" warranty. Well,I haven't much used my warranty and haven't really needed to. Most ofthe problems I've encountered have been relatively minor and were allsomething I could easily fix.At any rate, I've been having trouble with my manual transmission. Itseems to me the synchronizers are shot. I have trouble up-shifting(especially to 3rd) and recently started encountering real troubledown-shifting (especially to 3rd). After a day or so ofdouble-clutching, I finally had the opportunity to put the Jeep in theshop at the dealer from which I bought it thinking - "Gee, I'll be outof town so no rent car and that good old 7/70 powertrain warranty willcover this". But alas, after two 30 minute long distance cell calls, my dealertells me that my warranty won't cover the repairs because they found"water in the transmission" and that, dear Jeep folks, constitutes"abuse" in the eyes of Jeep/Chrysler (notwithstanding all the Jeepcommercials showing their products fording those crystal mountainstreams.)

My question: Is it possible forwater to enter the transmission by condensation through the breather?I can assure you that I have never driven my Jeep through water deepenough to get to the breather (or even to the bottom of thetransmission), so either the transmission is defective as built or myservice personnel have their heads up something other than servicemanual. I'd get the Chrysler Area Representative involved, Brad. Ordinarilythis will be such a small amount of water that it won't cause anyproblem. There was a poster to this news group from Panama whocomplained of having to drain the water from his transmission andaxles on a regular basis. jeep chrysler : A very small amount of water is easily detected in transmissionoil because the gears will whip it into an emulsion which changesthe consistency and color of the fluid. A few drops will give theoil a very different appearance. This might give the dealer anexcuseto claim finding water in your transmission. If they intend todeny your warranty claim, they need to let the water settle out ofthe lubricant so they can determine exactly how much water wasinvolved. If they didn't do this and you take them to court youshould be able to convince a judge that any water in yourtransmission was condensation and no evidence of abuse.What doesn't make sense to me is how water or water in oil willdestroy a synchronizer and not damage bearings and gears. Asynchronizer is made out of bronze or a similar corrosionresistant alloy, and rides on a polished steel cone. Tell thedealer you will take them to court and that you and the judge willwant to see corrosion damage. Chances are real good that thesynchronizer was defective and just wore out.My '94 YJ was used exclusively as a "car" by the previous owner (neveroff-road) and since it's not my trail rig, I've never taken it throughanything deeper than maybe half way up the wheels. jeep chrysler : I've also got the failing synchro's problem. I had to nearly stop todown-shift into second gear. Upshifting into second isn't too bad if you'regentle. Anyway, I decided to change the trans fluid (it's got approx 45Kmiles on it), and I was *amazed* at how "milky" the fluid looked (usuallythe result of water in the fluid), despite the fact that it hasn't "gonedeep".Just changing the fluid made things noticeably better, and I'm told going toa synthetic gear lube can make even more of a difference. Personally, I'vedecided to live with mine as is until I get close to the end of my 70Kwarranty (I transferred the powertrain warranty from the original owner),and then change the trans fluid again (so they don't find any water) andtake it in for service. My reasoning for waiting is that I figure my clutchwill have some decent mileage on it by then, and that way I can probably getthem to do the clutch for not much more money while they've got the transapart.I don't know if synchros are covered or not, so I guess I'll find out inanother year or two. jeep chrysler : I was reading through the group and at some point you mention that youmay overdrive the blower and change to Mustang 5.0 injectors. I amnot sure about the validity of this info but you may want to look atthis page - Part way down he talks about the different injectors.
