jeep cj : Ditto here on the AMC fan. I'd take a look at a Chrysler Torqueflight727, or a T-18 out of an old J-Truck if you want a manual. You might alsocheck with Advance Adaptors, and see if they have any suggestions. ANV4500 would my personal choice for this engine.Jack Bergeron, , Jeep DriverCome To Utopia! telnet://blacktape.cs.uchicago.edu:3000 I'm BluedawgObWittySig: Q: If you could be any animal, what would you be?John Sidney Linnell's A: A delicious Steak Dinner. The torqueflite out of a late model Grand Wagoneer will fit, or a TH400from an early model Wagoneer. Either will bolt right up with the rightflexplate and starter, "caution" the 88 and up torqueflights use a Gearreduction starter which is metric. Also in either case you should be ableto fit virtually any transfer case by exchanging the tailcone andtailshaft from any appropriate Jeep, GM or Dodge truck that used thetransfer case of your choice. If you prefer a Manual try a T-18 4speedwith granny gear from a late 70's J-truck (does NOT require adapter)although you will probably have to use a Spicer 20 t-case. If you feel theneed to keep your dana 300 try using your bellhousing with a T-176 4-speedalthough some feel this is only marginal with a beefed V8.

jeep cj : Van I. Phifer, Mechanical EngineerMechanical Maintenance, InstructorPromotions Coordinator, Northwoods Jeep JamboreeTry a Torqueflite from a Late model Wagoneer or early AMC Passenger car,or a TH400 from a early model Wagoneer or CJ. As long as you get thematching flexplate with the tranny you will be alright. Caution 88 andnewer torqueflites use a metric gear reduction starter. On either modelyou can exchange the tailshft and tailcone with Dodge or GM model and useone of their tranfer cases. If a Manual trips your trigger try a T-18 froma late 70's J-truck (no adapter required) although you will have to use aSpicer 20 T-case. If you want to use your Dana 300 T-case you can use theTremec T-176 4-speed, there is some question as to it's durability whenused with a beefed V8.Van I. Phifer, Mechanical EngineerMechanical Maintenance, InstructorPromotions Coordinator, Northwoods Jeep JamboreeI agree the Torqueflite will do the job, but it's a Chryslertransmission, not an AMC, and he's looking for an AMC solution. If he were willing to go for another manufacturer, then I would thinkan NV4500 would best fit the bill. Adapters required, of course. TheTH400 is also a good option. AMC might have used them, but they wereof course of GM manufacture. I have a 29-year old TH400 that is nowgetting a little tired in my '67 Commando. The original owner swearsit's never been out to be fixed. It's starting to shift a little hardand abruptly, and has a slow leak now, so I suppose I'll need to haveit looked at soon. But after all, the odometer is on it's third timearound (278,000 miles). The TH400 behind a Buick V6 is prettydurable!Gary'67 Commando'92 Cherokee'97 Wrangler TJ

The TH400 behind a Buick V6 is prettydurable!Gary<<Technically correct, however these are AMC-only versions of the trans, sothey really ARE an AMC solution since AMC didn't make their own trannies. There is also an AMC version of the T-18...these are hard to come by andexpensive when you do find them, that is why the Ford T-18 is swapped inwith adapters. Should be able to use any tranny that was found behind a360/401...just a matter of adapting it to your t-case, which makes unitsfrom Wagoneers and J-series trucks your best bet since in the correctversion they may bolt right in.

jeep cj : Jeep never ever made a transmission. I only suggested options which wouldbolt up to his engine with AMC parts and since both the TH400 andTorqueflite were used in AMC and Jeep vehicles they qualify as Jeep (theywere special parts for AMC and will not bolt up to other than AMC engineswithout adapters). The NVG 4500 is a very good tranny but was NEVERavilable in a Jeep vehicle and no factory parts are available to mate thisunit to a 401, as well the price makes this an unpleasant option costingpast $1500 for parts not including the time and aggravation to install. writes:[]" The 401 is EATING my original T4 Transmission that the stock Jeep came"with. If any other motor heads out there can recommend anything different"then the article in the Four Wheeler did (they recommend the Ford T-18"manual trans. or the TH400 automatic--both of which require"conversion/adaptor kits which are big bucks from places like Advanced"Adaptors in FL & CA.).ford np-435. it's shorter than the t-18 but still big'n'tough. stillneeds a t/c adaptor, though.

jeep cj : I am interested in possibly purchasing a Jeep CJ 5,6, or 7. It will be usedas a vehicle for hunting expeditions. I don't need a Jeep that will climbthe Empire State Bldg, but it should be able to handle just about anycountry route labled (Jeeps only). Does anyone have suggestions on what Ishould look for and how I should further equip the beastie?Jeep CJ 5,6 or 7 (Are the newest jeeps worth a look at for what I want?)6 cylinder4 (or 5 if they exist) speed manual transmissionfront manual lockers31 or 33 inch tires.? (should I have a set of highway tires or what off-roadtires will work decent on pavement)hard or soft top (which is better?)Doors would be necessity.Suspension (not sure what is best)Warn Winch (what is best poundage)Be able to tow a decent trailer (saw a cool trailer in an a current 4Wheelermag, can't remember the name but it was bright red and the hitch was not aball hitch, so it could be at a 45 degree angle to the towing vehicle) onthe freeway at a speed around 55-65 mph.Give decent fuel mileage.I do not want to spend a lot of time and money maintaining. You can email me and/or respond to this group.Thank you for your help.
