jeep engine : Why bother? You can probably get a junkyard 350 V8 and an adapter for the same money.LOTS more power.--James H.SLC, Utah.76 FJ40 'ChipetaWasatch CruisersTLCA #11233FJ40OMERS900035InchMTR's Non-USADistJimCCarbStock otherwise.Group: rec.autos.4x4 Date: Sat, Jan 12, 2002, 10:54am (EST-2) From: (CruiserHead) wrote> Thanks for the advise, but no thanks. I love that little four cylinderof mine. It's my little baby and I want to keep it. It's so simple towork on. I can still remember pulling out of the dealership after buyingit in 1988, BURN RUBBER!!! I let out the clutch a little too quick withtoo much gas and everyone at the dealership was probably thinking "Ihope it lasts longer than the warrantee"......I will never part withthat 2.5, or the Jeep. It gets me to my camp every time, even when theaxles sink in the mud. I bought a hand winch and shovel for thosenightmares. My wife and I tried out a 1986 Cherokee when they were new. Only motors were the GM 2.8L V6 and the 2.5L 4cyl. The 4 cyl was a gutsy little motor around town and only barely outpowered by the V6 at highway speeds.

jeep engine : Hi all, have aquestion to ask of anyone that has replaced the enginein a wrangler. I do not need Balls to Wall power. A small V-8 or V-6or similar would be suff.I have an 89 with the carter carb, I can not get it to pass inspectionfor emissions.1. What is the best engine to replace the 258 with.2 what is the easiest enginge to replace with 3. What is the least expensive engine.4. Are there any that will be an almost direct bolt in5. Are there any good replacements that I can replace it withthat have fuel injectionAnswers to #1,#2,& #3 are I-258, #4 & #5 is none with the possible exception of a 4.0 Jeepengine with its original computer. The I-258 is a good engine, well matched to the Jeep.Your '89 (depending on mfg date) may have the Peugot tranny that will NOT stand a biggerengine. The sanest upgrade is to add a later model 4.0 head, FI, and computer to your4.2 Any V-8 or V-6 will entail a new computer, new tranny, new radiator, specialbellhousing, and special motor mounts. Standard number to think about is $3000 for a Chevyv-8 install.

jeep engine : The simplist approach is to get the existing engine to pass the inpsection. Given the ratsnest of vacuum hoses and do-dads that is not always that easy. You might want to look at for some ideas of where to start. If the problem is stumbling at idle try:Actually, do this anyway!!I'd swap in a 92+ 4.0 from a wreck. You'll need the computer and harnessfrom the 4.0 too. If you have a puegot tranny, I'd stick a 4.0/ax-15 in it.You can pick up a complete drivetrain from a low-mile wreck for about $2000.That would be a pretty easy swap, since you just pull your engine/tranny/tcand drop in the new one. There will be some wiring, and exhaust work to do,but if you have manual, it's pretty easy. The Chevy 4.3 (V6) is an excellent engine, especially the newer ones. Ifyou can find one with CPI, you'll have plenty of HP. It 's generlly easierto swap engine and transmission instead of trying to mate your existingtranny to a swapped in engine. If you don't need tons of power, the Chevy4.3 mated with a 700R4 automatic works great. That is the exact swap I did. You can get most of the stuff you needfrom Howell Engineering (wiring harness, fuel pump, ect. ) ,advancedadapters, and M.O.R.E. to do the swap. The swap will probably costaround 3500 - 4000 dollars to do if you do it all yourself. The goodpart about using the 4.3L is that you can swap to a 350 later withalmost no cost, and effort. Just a bigger radiator, new fuel pump, andexhaust refitted. I personnally prefer the 4.3L to a larger V8 at themoment, it has plenty of power, but will not break shit left and right.

jeep engine : I got caught in a flash flood that killed my engine. I was able to start thecar after an hour but now my doors do not lock at 15miles/hr like they usedto. Also, it does not get into overdrive so I am doing about 3000 RPM at65miles/hr. At idle the RPMs go up and down between 500rpm and 1500rpm.i would suggest getting some wirering dryer and spray the wires down good.maybe your breather is full of water for your transmission. did you get all the water out of the engine if you got any in it?other than that i would suggest takeing it to a dealer sorry not more help"SNJ" wrote in message...You've likely got a lot of silt and dirt inside your electricalconnectors, as well as many of your engine's sensor connectors too. I'dtake it to a coin-up carwash and clean up everything as thoroughly asyou can, including the engine compartment, then start unplugging andrinsing ALL electrical connectors you can find with healthy squirts ofWD-40. The WD-40, which sucks as a lubricant by the way, is VERYeffective at flushing dirt out of electrical connectors as well asdispersing any water in them. WD-40 has saved me several times onelectrial problems where my Jeep had picked up some mud or dirt inside.

jeep engine : I am having serious problems with blowby on my 91 Wrangler, 4.0. Severalmonths ago I posted an article concerning oil in my air cleaner. I replacedthe hose assembly which attaches to the rear grommet. It still lost a bit ofoil, but not too badly. I would add a quart every couple weeks. I check theoil with every tank of gas.I drove to Rhode Island over the Christmas holiday miles) and noted agood deal of oil in the air cleaner and added a quart at every fillup. I justthought it was the non-stop, long distance drive. The oil pressure gauge waspegged. Well that happened before, I'll just replace the sender, again.I noticed a large puddle of oil on the ground the morning after arriving atmy Dad's house. Crap. We added 4 quarts of oil and started it up. Oil wasGUSHING from the oil filter. It appeared to have blown the gasket out. Webought a new oil pressure sender, and new air and oil filters. Installedeverything and filled up on oil again. This time my father watched as Icranked up the engine. The engine wasn't runnning for 5 seconds before my dadshouted to shutdown. It blew out the new oil filter gasket.
