When you're talking about a vheicle in the $40K-$60K range, coming upwith the money to buy it is one thing, but you have to keep in mind thatthe story doesn't end there. You also have to be able to afford toregister it each year, and pay for its maintenance and repairs, theso-called Cost of Ownership. On any luxury vehicle, the cost ofownership can be very, very high, especially if you have everything doneat the dealer. The registration of a new Range Rover in WashingtonState, for example, is well over a thousand dollars each year for severalyears until the sliding scale brings it down. The registration cost ofour 1991 Range Rover finally fell below $500 this year.So really the Land Rover vs Land Cruiser vs Jeep Cherokee vs Jeep GrandCherokee debate comes down to how much you want to spend and which oneyou like the most. If like me, you really like Land Rovers due to theirdesign, capabilities, history, etc., the decision is made. If you do nothave particularly strong feelings for one over any of the others but wantgood capabilities and value for money, I would say one of the Jeeps isthe better choice, unless you really like Jeeps for all the reasons Ilike Land Rovers, in which case the Jeep is the only choice. The LandCruiser is in the same category as the Range Rover: you'd better REALLYwant one to justify the cost of the US version.
jeep grand cherokee : From a purely objective standpoint, the Range Rover or the Land Cruiserisn't going to do that much better on or off the road than either of theJeeps to warrant the huge difference in price, and there are plenty ofpeople who feel the Jeeps do a better job than either of the imports. Ipersonally believe the Range Rover and Land Cruiser are potentiallybetter than the Jeeps off road, but $20K-$30K better, well, I'd be hardpressed to argue that one unless I was Bill Gates or a lottery winner. Discovery and Jeep Grand Cherokee prices are much closer together, so itreally boils down to personal preference between them and which of theirfeatures appeal to you the most; they are quite a bit different from eachother. When it comes to the two Jeeps, there are people on thisnewsgroup who feel that for off-road use, the Cherokee is better than theGrand Cherokee, but I don't know enough about either vehicle to state ameaningful opinion one way or the other. Perhaps someone else can giveyou some guidance on that subject.

The Jeep is much better in every way, although the Range Rover is better if you are a serious off roader. So why, then, do people still continue to buy Range rovers when they are A)Less powerful B) More Expensive and C) They don't have as much equipment. I dunno, puzzles me. Sam Jordan Is a Rangie a comparable vehicle to the Cherokee ? I'd say the Discowas a much closer comparison.I loved the Cherokee when I saw the adverts. Saw one in the flesh andrejected it immediately - it's just too _small_ (and it's not oftenyou say that about an American vehicle).The Cherokee is cheap, and it looks nice cruising around the streetsof Aspen (in Milton Keynes they both look silly). For some Discoowners, those without dogs, children or horses, it might make aworkable substitute. Try towing with a Cherokee though and it's prettyhorrid. It pulls a fair weight, and it stops well enough, but trytowing an awkward load with a heavy or variable nose weight. It'snothing like as bad as a Daihatsu, but it still squashes the rearsuspension flat and turns the ride into a concrete mixer. Look aroundat any horse event - the tow cars you see with horse boxes are nearlyall old Rangies, Discos, Shoguns or Troopers. You don't see anythinglike as many of the Cherokees, Daihatsus or Suzukis (and LandCruisers are expensive over here). I need to move a trailerful ofmilling machine in a few weeks - I'll be glad I have the Rangie's rearself leveller to do it, and the thumping big four wheel disks too.
jeep grand cherokee : I wouldn't touch a Cherokee - simply not enough load space. I don't doit all the time, but there are times when I want a delivery van I candrive wearing a suit and tie. I'm just back from a trip on site whereI had the Rangie loaded with two PCs, two monitors, a UPS, clothes fora fortnight, room for a passenger and their kit, and a tent & rucksackfor a weekend away in the middle. I might have got all that into aCherokee, but in the Rangie I still had room for the _sixteen_ opticaldrives I needed too.The Disco has taken over the 1970 Range Rover's function as a dual usevehicle. The 1990's Rangie is now a boardroom on wheels, or a 7 seriesBMW with off-road capability. The Cherokee doesn't have the cachet orthe luxury to compete here, and the price tags aren't too important tothis market either.Oh yes, and I can drive my Rangie over things I have to carry mymountain bike over, and fix it with a rock if I do break it. Even myDad knows how to fix Rangies, and he hasn't quite got the grasp of anynew vehicle technology invented since 1947.

Actually, in the US at any rate, the Jeep Grand Cherokee competes with theLand Rover Discovery, Ford Explorer (sort of), the Chevy Blazer, Toyota4Runner, and Nissan Pathfinder. The Chevy Tahoe/Suburban and the new FordExpedition are considerably larger and more powerful.I don't think the Jeep competes with the Toyota Landcruiser/Lexus 450either. The Land Cruiser is a larger and far more capable vehicle,particularly off-road. Comparing the Land Cruiser to the Range Rover is avalid thing to do when making a purchase decision. But the Jeep GrandCherokee, while it has superior highway handling, acceleration, andbraking than either vehicle, is simply not designed for hard, off-roaduse, from its small cargo capacity to its unibody construction to itsstaggered differentials.Of course, how many people actually take their 4wds off the pavement.....?
