The finest racingautomobiles have R&P steering.I agree with you that automotive designs are taking us to the Rav4, CRV type of vehicles, but yourmoronic view that R&P steering has never worked is beyond comprehension.rack and pinion does work, for a few miles. Go into a Midas Muffler orsimilar shop, and you'll see stacks and stacks of replacement R & Passemblies. Then ask to see their replacement parts for recirculating ballsteering systems.l There will be not even ONE! R & P is very cheap to make,expensive to repair. 99% of all the wear in R & P is right in the center ofthe rack, and in just one place on the pinion. This is because almost allthe steering-wheel movement is for small corrections in straight aheaddriving. Soon several inches of wheel play developes. R & P was used inthe 1920's, and that era. It was given up by reputable manufacturers, butreintroduced in econo boxes when they began to appear. R & P is like frontwheel drive, and struts. All three are cheap to make, expensive to repair.The manufacturer saves money in building, and makes money selling parts andlabor to fix em. It is true that golf carts and riding mowers have r & p.Not because it makes for better handling, but because it is c h e a p. Inrace cars, the steering has to last only a few ;hundred miles. They are designed to workat spindle level parallel through independent suspension. So, on a Jeep straightaxle the R & P would be the first thing that got whacked. But, for sporty carsthey are exactly what is needed, because they are designed to link at theprecise position to work with their "A" frame or strut geometry. A gear box mustuse an idler, and then it's difficult to have the tie rods beat at a good allaround road race position. The R & P failures you see are from poor maintenance,usually some jerk adds ATF to bring the reservoir full, it then carries airbubbles and the lubrication fails and we see the metallic particles in the oilindicating the wear. But, I'm sure they could build one strong enough to use onthe 36" travel 4 X 4 Baha trucks, and I bet they do. Later, BillBill, thanks for another point of view. The liberty is brand new, and DC will neet time tofix the bugs that they haven't found yet in the new design. Thesuspension design hasn't changed since '86, and it blows throughshocks really quickly, especially the soft factory ones. After 1year, a friend replaced his Xterra's shocks with Rancho RSXs, and he'smuch happier now, especially since the Ranchos come with a lifetimewarranty. He'll be using it.Other than that, the Xterra is an excellent rig with Nissan's historyof reliability behind it. For light offroading, either the Xterra or the Libertywould be fine.The Xterra is basically a Nissan Frontier pickup truck with a tallboxy body placed onto it, and has all the good and bad features of theFrontier -- rugged frame, decent towing capability, large carryingcapacity, heavy weight, poor gas mileage, poor performance, sluggishsteering, jouncy ride when lightly loaded due to the buggy springs(leaf springs) on the rear axle. It is, however, roomy and coollooking. It can also be turned into a reasonable offroader withaftermarket parts, though Nissan offroad parts aren't as widelyavailable as, say, Toyota Tacoma, Suzuki Sidekick, or Jeep Wrangleroffroad parts.
