I love the Scrambler and wanted one for a while but bought a 7instead. I thought they came with the 258 stock and a 304 (not 308)option, but I'm not sure. I doubt a 350 would do serious damage andmated to a NV4500 and a Dana 300 would be a great combo easliy tuned forgood off-road torque. I wouldn't try to build a high hp motor in it butthat is just me. A small block350 is a common swap and would NOT tweak your frame unless you overbuiltit...I've seen Scramblers with 500 cid Caddy engines in 'em. 258/4.2engines are neither expensive nor difficult to come by, though I'd bemore inclined to look for a 4.0 (preferably the HO version) from aCherokee/Comanche or newer Wrangler.
jeep scrambler : Coupla corrections ... 1) the V8 used in Jeeps was a 304, not a 308, 2)the scrambler is a CJ8, not a CJ10, and 3) the Chevy 350 is a smallblock, not a big block.If I could get into a Scrambler in decent running condition for $4500,I'd probably write the check today. I've only done routine maintenence on the engine, and it's fine. The 4 speed has needed bearings twice and a gear or two. I, too, think a 304 was offered with the Scrambler. If a CJ-7 would handle the torque, why not a CJ-8?AMC 304's were offered in the CJ-8 until 1982. You said the one you're looking at has the 4cyl in it? That should be a GM motor which will give you a step up on a 350 transplant.
jeep scrambler : I guess I'm a die hard jeep fan because I wouldn't put a chevy motor in my jeep. I've been tempted to do it before, but instead sourced out a AMC 401 and a T-18? Other than drive shafts and one motor mount it was a direct bolt in.-- When you can read this: "01000111/01001111/01000110/0100100 1 01010011/01001000/00100001" it's time for a break!!Although your alegiance to the Jeep name is admirable, please do not forgetthat your "Jeep" came factory with a GM or Chrysler motor, Ford Electronics,a GM steering column, and a Chrysler trans (the auto). Dropping in a Chevy motor does not seem out of line, and is much cheaper to build andmaintain than an old AMC unit. The very essence of a "Jeep" even from thefactory, seems to be "use what works best" no-matter who makes it.
