jeep soft top : When the top is on the Jeep:As Jerry said - good UV inhibitor.Since you have no garage, get a good UV blocking car cover. Wash thewindows, before putting the cover on.Keep the windows clean (use a SOFT cloth and flood with water before wipingto remove heavy abrasives)Don't use armor-all on the top - it'll dry it out (of course, I didn't learnthis from experience. :-))Be sure the top and bows are adjusted properly. If you reduce the flapping, the top will last longer. When storing the top:Put soft sheets over the windows when removing the top.Get a top storage bag.Don't roll the top - fold it and store it on a shelf with nothing on top ofit. When putting it back on, flood it with water from a hose to clear theaccumulated dirt and abrasives off of it.As nice as it is to roll the top and leave it on the jeep (so you've got itwhen a sudden rainstorm appears), it's not real good for the top to do that. Those are the times that I got the most window scratching.Aside from window scratching, the next thing that goes is the seams (threadrots.) Any good upholstery shop can restitch the seams, make sure they useheavy nylon or plastic thread. If you've used the UV inhibitor, the threadshould also last quite a while.
jeep soft top : Taking care of a soft top can be tedious at times. Any combination of thethings mentioned should increase the life of the top. My problem is thatsometimes I get into a hurry and don't follow my own advice. That's thereason why my tops probably don't last much longer the 3-4 years. That'salso the reason that I got a hard top for Rocky this year....--Tim Black'82 CJ8'Rocky the Wonder Jeep' (wonder if I'll get home....) :-)My biggest problem was the zippers tearing out of the windows. The topshould go 5+ years easy.AdamTim Black wrote in message...Not long. Always be sure to remove your soft top before you roll your jeep.--Tim Black'82 CJ8'Rocky the Wonder Jeep' (wonder if I'll get home....) :-)My soft-top is now 8 years old. The back window is really scratched upfrom being rolled up and down an awful lot. Of course it's never beenoff-road but I don't care about that.I say 3 years is about the norm IF you beat the hell out of your Jeep(like I do <g>). I've had my Jeep for 3 years, and I'm on the secondtop (first set of windows). HOWEVER, the top was replaced underwarranty because some of the stitching was coming undone. My sidewindows are scratched all to hell from tree branches (I even have asmall hole where a branch poked right through when I leaned it upagainst a tree), but I can still see through them fine. They aren'thazed at all because when I do clean them, I stick to Jerry B's codeof "NO PAPER PRODUCTS ON THE WINDOWS!" The rear window is hazed wherethe straps that holds it up do their job. You can relpace the windowsseparately from the top, and IMHO, your rear window should last 4-5years (with care), the sides should do 5+ years (with care) and thetop itself, 6+ years (with care). jeep soft top : I have choice to buy a factory soft topfor $545.00 or a kline for around $320.Does the extra $200.00 justify the means? I heard many bad and good thingsabout after market tops. The bad are they always don't fit right, the goodis they are cheap. I'd rather spend an extra $200.00 if I'm going to beMUCH HAPPIER with the factory. Anybody advise? andrew From: ()Subject: Re: Jeep soft top factory aftermarket? This included soft doors. In article (Andrew James Mullin) writes:DO NOT get a Kayline top. They are ugly as hell! They are the ugliest topsI have ever seen! If you don't want to get the factory replacement then geta Bestop Supertop. Bestop actually makes the factory tops. The differencebetween the two are that the rear windows on the Supertop are obstructed by the frame whereas they aren't on the factory replacement. Oh I just thought of something. Are you replacing a hard top or do you have the factory soft-top already? If you already have the factory top then you can get just the replacement fabric for around $300. The Supertop is about $350.I have the Supertop on mine. The frame is kind of a pain to try to see around. jeep soft top : I have a Supertop on my CJ + it's great except the frame is kind of apain to see around. I drove it across the country and encountered some ofthe worst weather I've ever seen. I felt like I was in a hurricane. Thewind must have been blowing ~60mph and it was raining so hard that thetraffic on Interstate 80 was doing 10mph. That was the crowd that hadn'tpulled off the road. The doors had about an inch gap of the downwind sidedue to the pressure. Never once did the door open. I never got any waterin the car due to the top. My feet were wet because the fresh air vent hadwater pouring out of it but the rest of the truck was dry. Great top. BriggsI've been looking for a soft-top for almost year, but I think the cheaper routeis to look in local "trader" magazines. You can find the top and doors for as little as $100.00 and you can go and look at it...even try it on...before buying. From: ()Subject: Re: Jeep soft top factory aftermarket? I think I've heardbefore on this group that SteelHorse soft tops suck. What are otheroptions? Is besttop the only one? Who has the best deals on Bestops? AllI need is a replacement top, without the hardware. Anyone have anyadvice??I'm not sure if anybody sells a soft top without the hardware - most ofthe aftermarket tops come with new hardware that doesn't quite work theway the factory stuff does (this is the "suck" factor). The factorytop is made by Bestop, so that's your best chance of finding whatyou're looking for (their "replace-a-top" MAY come as just a top meantto mount onto factory hardware). The exact top that comes from thefactory isn't available as an aftermarket item from anybody but Mopar. You can order the Bestop Replacement top from Quadratec and it justgives you the top, no hardware. I just had to replace mine about 3 monthsago, somethin' like that. They also have clear windows or the tinted windows(not the door windows).
