jeep tj : It gets funny sometimes reading all of these various posts, and noticing howopinionated people get. The conversations quickly turn into raging debates,with each side trying so hard to prove their point. I normally wouldn'tjump in the middle of one of these, but I do want to offer my 3-cents worthwhen it comes to audio systems (I guess I have a strong opinion on thisone!).It isn't fair to stereotype (no pun intended) anyone interested inhigh-quality audio in their vehicle, even when it's our beloved Jeep TJ. Iowned my own high-end audio install shop for 10-years, and it was alwaysfrustrating being compared to the "bass pumping lowriders" or beingdismissed as just an annoyanceor excess waste of cash. People would complain "that loud noise isridiculous" or "it will ruin your eardrums".First, I can tell you from my experience, the majority of the high-endsystems I would put in were for professional people that were alreadyaccustomed to great quality sound reproduction. They would have great soundat home, but the sound of stock vehicle systems was lacking. A fact thathas been proven is that a lesser sound system with little amplification anddistorted speakers would hurt your ears much more than a quality systemproducing more decibels.
jeep tj : Yes, a Jeep TJ is a challenging platform to achieve great quality sound, butI know many installers have a goal to make the system produce a more evenspectrum of frequencies from 20-20Khz. It would be a system that could beplayed at the same relative volume as usual, but with much better dynamics -not a boomin' nuisance that everyone associates with so quickly.It is also a huge satisfaction to complete your own custom stereo install,turn the knob, and have awesome tunes pouring out (I'm sure it very similarto watching your Jeep articulate after upgrading your suspension). jeep tj : Distortion is only a measured change between the input and outputsignal. A fuzz-guitar is distorting a pure sinusoidal signal intosomething full of overtones doesn't harm the ear any more than a puresinusoidal tone from a classical guitar. The human ear doesn't "know"if a tone is distorted since a tone is simply whatever it is. An amplifier that adds significant distortion does indeed sound worseand may sound *awful* ("oh man, that hurts my ears it sounds so bad")but in fact, the ear isn't being harmed at all by any level ofdistortion... it simply sounds bad, especially if you know what soundedlike originally and it's grossly different. So it's actually the dBlevel that, if high enough, can harm the ear... not the amount ofdistortion the amplifier adds to the original input signal. So while I agree otherwise with what you said, I just have to say that a100 watt amplifier with a bunch of distortion doesn't "harm" the ear anymore than a 100 watt amplifier with very little distortion... in myopinion that is.Jerry--Jerry BransfordPP-ASEL KC6TAY C.A.P.The Zen Hotdog... make me one with everything!
jeep tj : The reason that I bought a TJ Jeep was for the sense of adventure thatit offered. I had had several Nissan pickup trucks since shortly after gettingmarried, and had one day seen a sneek peak article and picture in Carand Driver. This was back about mid '95. I looked through all theautomotive/4x4 mags as the months progresses. I thought about a YJ, butI wanted the coil springs and new interior that the TJ was going tooffer. So I continued to hold out for the new Jeep. Then one day my wife pagedme while I was at work. The dealer had just called to let her know thata new TJ had arrived. This was at the beginning of March, '96. Aboutseven months of dreaming and waiting. It turned out to be what I wanted. I had taken off of work early just togo get it. At that early date, they only offered the 2.5L, which was allthat I could afford anyways, not being a rich individual. But I'vedriven the 4.0L since, and I still prefer the 2.5L, especially offroad.
jeep tj : My favorite thing about my TJ is the fact that it allows me to follow mysense of adventure. There are very few trails that I can't take. I drove it up to my parents place this past summer. They happen to livein northern Ontario, in Canada. Around there are a lot of old loggingtrails and abandoned uranium mining roads. Some pretty rough terrain,compared to here in central Oklahoma. The TJ took me down quite a few ofthese old trails, with no problems at all. My wife owns a '96 Cherokee Sport 4.0L 4wd with all the power optionsand equipment. It's a real nice vehicle, and I enjoy driving itoccasionally. However, it's not my TJ. Just doesn't convey that funnessthat I get when driving the TJ. She bought a Pathfinder ($30,000?) a few monthsago. When she told my dad that she bought a sport utility because of ElNino, he nearly wet his pants. He thought he was a bad father. Think ofthe what one could get with that kind of dough! The fact is that oneshould not buy an SUV for El Nino. Get some flood insurance and a Totesbrand umbrella. I know that I bought my Jeep because there is nothingliking becoming one with the Jeep, not to mention something Jeep Chick saidbefore about women getting into a Jeep with a lift kit. It's not an SUV,it's a Jeep. It is something that only Jeep owners understand. I hopenobody buys one for El Nino (after all, it's only a weather phenomenon). Anyway, I think I'm babling at this point so I'll go.
