jeep wrangler : Disappointing, really. There's some of those that I'd like to seeimported into the United States -- Jeep needs some competition, they've been raising prices on the Wrangler and Cherokee (both ofwhich are quite inexpensive to make) because there's nobody elseselling capable offroad machines here (other than the 4wd truckmakers, but that's really a different market). For example, Dodgeimported the small Mitsubishi (is that the Pajero?) as the "DodgeRaider" for awhile, before Chrysler bought Jeep (at which point it wasdropped like a hot rock because it competed with Jeep). And the smallToyota Land Cruiser (as vs. the "Grand Cruiser" sold here now) wasdefinitely a good alternative to the Jeep Wrangler for off-road use. Not sold here now, sigh. Finally, regarding the Chevy S10 ZR2, stock it's no greatshakes. However, it is quite modifiable, and is relativelyinexpensive, and has 4 wheel disk brakes (the only small truck to havethat). The antiquated V6 engine is no great shakes, it's ratherinefficient and anemic compared to what's possible with modern enginetechnology, but is certainly adequate (my old S10 long-bed had the2.8L V6, much less power, and it was still quite adequate). You canbuild a pretty good off-road machine (though not as good for some usesas you can build out of a solid-axle vehicle like a Wrangler). For atruck, it's a good deal. Some of us, however, aren't interested inhaving a truck (we'd like a little more enclosed storage for when theweather is bad, thank you! And precise, non-numb, steering andhandling would be nice too). If I need a truck I'll buy one, butliving in the middle of a city, I have very little need for a truck.I lived on a farm for 4 years and had a truck during that time, and amintimately aquainted with their drawbacks (noise, ride, comfort, handling, numb steering, lack of enclosed storage, etc.).
jeep wrangler : I'm looking for information on safety of the 98 Wrnagler. I've heardnegative comments regarding rollover tendencies and lack of passengersafety associated with lack of hard top. Does anyone have informationor comments on this? Has there been any objective material writen onthe subject? I'm considering buying one and want to know the safetyconsiderations, if any. Any insight / advice is appreciated!!!The 97/98 Wrangler TJ actually does *very* well, safety-wise. Accordingto insurance industry actuarial tables, and this is a quote from theirwebsite... "Compared to most car models, (your) Jeep Wrangler is 11%better than average in accidents resulting in a bodily injury claim".In terms of how well the Jeep Wrangler holds up in a crash? Again, according to actuarial data provided by the insurance industry..."Compared to most car models, your Jeep Wrangler ranks 23% better thanaverage in accidents resulting in collision claims."A lot of the above has to do with Wrangler's heavy weight (typically3300 or 3400 lbs), it's heavy frame, and it's heavy steel body. It's astrong and safe vehicle, according to real data. How many other vehicles come with a factory roll bar? I think that coverssafety in a roll over. jeep wrangler : As far as roll overs are considered, what you are seeing is media hype.Yes, an SUV is more likely to roll over because the center of gravity ofthe vehicle is higher than a sedan or a sports car. If you buy a Wranglerand try to drive it as if it were a TransAm, you are more likely to roll. Most roll overs are a result of driver inexperience with an SUV.--______________________________________ _________________________________Mike Korzeniowski | Phone: +1-812-378-8898President / Software Engineer | Fax: +1-812-378-0743Software Engineering & Technology, Inc.| email: Columbus, IN USA | ---------------------------------------- -------------------------------Exactly! this is true, but wranglers are not anywhere as easy to roll aspeople think. I dont know how many of you have heard of something called JEEP101? well me and a friend did it over the summer up in new york. to digressa little bit lemme just say that it was the bomb, i definitley recomend thatif you ever recieve an invite, you should go. so anyway, they let you takeyour choice of jeep around this obstical course they have designed. so youthrow the thing in 1st (all automatics :-(and they let you go play. the course consists of piles of logs, really reallysteep inclines, and whatnot, but my point is, that one of the obsticals is aberm, a rather steep berm at that. and they let you go as high as you want onthis thing and get the truck to lean as much as you can. well, lemme tellyou, i had that thing just about as far up there as you can go, my friend inthe passenger seat wasnt in his seat anymore, he was now laying against thedoor. the jeep didnt show the slightest hint of wanting to roll. i was veryimpressed.Mike Korzeniowski wrote: jeep wrangler : --Craig S. It isdesigned as a protective rollbar but Chrysler's attorneys won't allow itto be described as a rollbar for potential liability reasons. Since noone at Chrysler is willing to place any of this in writing, arguing thispoint one way or the other is actually pretty useless.I cannot imagine that it is possible without hitting something first, I driveVERY hard, and have never come even close to lifting a wheel, it will alwaysslide first. On a safety front, I would far rather be in the Wangler than in a regularpassenger car, you have a much better survival chance, (unless you pick on a 38ton truck!)The new Wranglers are much safer than you would imagine... go to:This site will give you info on the safety of Jeeps. I ran a comparison onmy 97 Wrangler against my mother's 94 BMW 325i...guess which one's safer? That's right, the Jeep.-----------------Jason Leach jeep wrangler : _________________________________-JEEP® WRANGLER ULTIMATE RESCUE: AN EMERGENCY VEHICLE FOR ANY LOCATIONLas Vegas, Nev. -- Jeep® vehicles have a history of being capable andtrusted companions in emergency situations.
