jeep xj : We are renting an RV to go to Yellowstone and I would like to tow the 1994Jeep XJ 4.0L 4x4 with front grill guard. The RV has a standard 2" x 2"hitch.Renting a dolly from U-Haul is ~$40/day. No thanks. Apparently some tow barsare a little over $100.Has anyone here used tow bars with a Jeep XJ? What about with an XJ with agrill guard? Does the grill guard get in the way? Any brands you mightrecommend?I tow my xj with a 100 dollar Reese tubular tow bar. I got it at wall mart,trashed one (dont ask, ok well I drove over it while it was connected tojust the jeep and pole vaulted over it at 15 mph wee haw!) then I gotanother at Pep boys for 119 bucks. You have to mount the tow bar connectorbrackets to the jeep. I have mine mounted on a front reciever hitch that isbolted to the frame where the factory skid plate was. They work fine. Im notsure where you would mount yours. I imagine the grill gaurd if it is sturdycould be a mounting point instead of being in the way. I dont think thefactory bumper is strong enough. I use magnetic lights for the brake/turnsignalsLook on Ebay to see some pictures of them. You may even find one for salethat you like.Kevin

I still sort of want tokeep it - it's my spare car, which is why I'm hesitant to selling it.The Jeep's legally my mother's but she's signed the title to sell it.Needs a bit of TLC/work or an Jeep/4 wheel enthusiast, but runs fine... jeep xj : I recently read a news clip from Chrysler about the new Grand Cherokee.In it, they said that the new OHC V8 was designed to last 150,000 mi.without internal engine repairs. To say the least I was under-whelmed.I would expect any $30k vehicle to get at least upwards of 250k mi.without major engine repair if given good periodic maintenence.My current '94 XJ has 145,000 an is still running quite well. I do,having been a mechanic for 10 yrs. some years back, take good care ofit. Given my cherokee's trouble free history and other 4.0s that I'veknown, I have no reason to doubt seeing at least 250k.Does anyone else have any experience with high mileage 4.0's or XJ's ingeneral? The reason for the question is that I'm contemplating an addtional XJwhen the 99's are available. Chryslers lack of confidence in their ownengineering, however, leaves makes wonder how good of an idea this maybe.BTW, I've zero interest in Grand Cherokees at least until they at leastuntil they stop assuming that everybody wants an automatic tranmission.I have an 86 XJ Chief with the 2.8 V6, and with a rebuilt carb, and a newdriveshaft, it's hit about 300,355 miles. The odometer actually stopped a whileago (like 5 or 6 years), and it had a LOT of miles on it then. So, the figureis pretty close, but not absolute. I wasn't easy on it either, this box-stock XJ has seen a LOT of trails,bottoms of pits, and unfortunately once or twice, the tow truck..

jeep xj : I have a question for a fellow Jeep owner. He has a 1990 JC (XJ) six cyl auto. Recently his check eng light came on at around 63K or soand stays on. Everything seem to be working fine. He's going to change the O2 sensor thinking that that is possibly what triggered it. I'm under the impression that the light comes on at some pre-determined interval. Will the light go out after the O2 sensor is changed or is there a switch to throw to reset it? If it's a switch can anyone tell me where it is? Youhave two choices: One disconnect the old module and throw it away and forgetabout it, or two, disconnect the old module and pay big bucks to the localdealer for a new module which will kick on the light in another period ofhours run. On my Jeep Commanche I threw it away and forgot about it! Thisis the only way to get rid of that annoying light. jeep xj : My 1990 Xj Lim has installed some sort of alarm. The brand is Apache. It hasa kill switch under the dash, a siren under the hood and a little ledshowing it is activated. It can lock the door locks. It is activated bymovement in the vehicle.Can anybody describe how this alarm works. Do I have to operate it with theswitch? Can it be turned on/off by the remote that opens/locks the doors?Was this alarm a factory instalation or is it put in afterwards? Does Apachealarms still exist. The switch only works when the key isin the ignition with the ignition turned on. With the ignition turned on,flip the valet switch. This should turn the red led on or off. When thered LED is constantly lit, the alarm system is disabled. When the light isout, the alarm is enabled but disarmed. The remote should now function toarm and disarm when the ignition key is turned off. A flashing LED meansthat the alarm is armed. This is how most alarms work. Apache is anaftermarket alarm that I have not heard of and it may operate differently.
