used jeep : The sweet spot in the price/perforamnce/reliability curve is the'91 to '95 4.0 liter (6 cyl) with a 5 speed. Good engine, goodtranny, good performance, reasonable miles.Prices run in the$5000 to $8000 range. Mid '89 and '90 are good on the low end butyou get the infamous Carter BBD carb (works ok when it works!)'97 is ok if you can get a good price on it. 4cyl are usuallymuch cheaper and all YJ's and TJ have the FI so not too muchreson to pick a specific year. Stay away from a 4cyl with eitheran auto or A/C (wimpy!) Beware of anything under around $3000 ifyou are not a mechanic. Good deals can be had but you can be hadalso.Conditon is everything. Check out the 4wd stuff (transfer case,front axle, disconnects,etc) as well as the tranny and clutch.Jeep stands for 'Just Empty Every Pocket', the 4wd components areexpensive to fix. Other than that, the standard used car stuff:crash damage, interior, miles, price, clean title, solid engine,tires, brakes. If you aren't a mechanic, this is one vehicle thatI would DEFINATELY take to an expert before you buy. I talked toone guy who spent $90 three times!

You should get aThe "new" suspension you refer to is actually very old AMC design (1984 XJ,I believe). The square headlights were absolutely perfect with AMC'sbrilliant redesign of the CJ. And, you are correct sorta.The CJ7 got widened to combat the roll over thing, and the YJ got lowered.The CJ5 got discontinued.The YJ also got lighter as a result of CAFE requirements. This wasaccomplished mainly by going to aluminum cases on the tranny and Tcase. Ithink that; the axles also got some kind of treatment (made smaller) to makethem lighter, but I am not sure on that one. Oh yeah, the YJ brought us thechain drive Tcase which should also be lighter than its gear drivencounterparts.Okay, I'm new here, but I am an old Jeeper or rather I had a '77 CJ-5 when I wasyoung and am now old. But I've been four wheeling for the last 16 years in aToy. My Jeep was equipped with an I-6 258 and was okay until I started to hopit up and then it just became a money pit. I should have left it the way itwas. I am in the Houston area and although it's flat around here, there isplenty of mud. I never had any problems with roll over because I never letpeople stand up in it while we were moving. A couple of football playersstanding up substantially increases the center of gravity and they roll over,which as I recall was what was happening. The problem I have seen with the CJ'sthat are of that era is that the floor boards are rusting out. The reason Ididn't buy another Jeep when I bought my Toyota was AMC was cheaping out onframe paint and under body finishing. In short, new, they were alreadyrusting. If you can find somebody that has kept the vehicle in a garage and hascleaned it thoroughly after each mud bath, then you can start looking at themechanics. I would crawl under it with a flash light and if it looks bad underthere, you can bet the owner didn't care much for it mechanically either. ACJ-7 is a little more stable and more roomier up front. Jeeps were just fine when AMC was in charge.Chrysler engineers must have been jealous, because they started changingthings - not to make them better, but just to make them cheaper...and justfor the sake of saying they made a change. Chrysler has never understoodwhat a Jeep is supposed to be, and therefore, they have diluted Jeeps andbastardized them. AMC designers and engineers have won more off-road and4-wheel drive awards than any other design team. And that is true eventoday. AMC is very much alive even now, but is growing rapidly weaker asChrysler makes Jeeps more and more car-like.
