used jeep wranglers : I'm looking into buying a Wrangler or CJ7 in the near future, and was hoping I could get other opinions on performance, maintainance costs, etc. From what I've heard, they have a pretty ugly reputation for service records... and the thought of having to dissect a breakdown-prone 4wd system doesn't really excite me. Hmm... maybe I'll just settle for a Suzuki Samurai, as I hear they roll just as well sideways as forward. Anyone have any Jeep experience/recommendations?I've had a few problems with my 89 Wranlger... first, don't ever usethe 4wd on anything but slick mud, ice, etc. You don't need it exceptin those circumstances anyway. And it'll keep you from breaking ujointyokes like I have 7 times. Stay away from the 4.2l (258cid) straightsix, at least with the stock feedback carb. Its a total piece of junk.Other problems I've had: broken ring gear in rear diff broken drivers seat back pulled a seat mount thru the floor (who slows down for speedbumps?) one tierod end both headlights headlight switch thermostat waterpump is going... clutch slave cylinder zippers and seams falling apart in soft top

used jeep wranglers : Around town or screwing around offroad the Wrangler is generally a blast, tho. Its *Really* lousy on the highway, tho.I have a 1988 JEEP Wrangler soft top, 258 I6 carb engine. I've heard a lot of stories, good and bad. Problems: Water pump replaced, catalytic converter replaced, soft top falls apart at the seams and the windows will get scratched( I had an upholstery company double stitch the seams and had the snaps replaced when they fell out), soft top noisy and a little drafty at highway speeds.Recommendations: GET THE HARD TOP! It's removable for warm summers. The softtop just isn't worth it. I'm looking into an aftermarket hard top for mine. Get the 6 cyl fuel injected engine if you buy new. I haven't had any trouble with my carb engine but some people have. Nothing else has broken. I love it and wouldn't own anything else. ________________________________________ ________ If we were not crazy, we would go insane. If we could not laugh, we would go insane! J. used jeep wranglers : I've got an '87 Wrangler that I really like. I've had it since 1989 andhave put almost 40k miles on it. During that time I've bought tires, a lift kit, Rancho shocks, a new top, a new stereo, a new battery, a new fuelpump, a new fuel filter, a new steering box, a K&N air filter, new plug wires, and some various ignition parts I can't recall right now. I've also hadthe radator rebuilt twice -- the second time correctly. It rides like an old buckboard and is so noisy you can't have a decentconversation at normal tones on the highway. The gas mileage is under 20 mpgand the floor gets wet when it rains. I used to have some decent carpet in itbut it got muddy and wet so I pulled it out and stuffed it in the back of mywife's car for later cleaning. My bother-in-law threw it away thinking it was garbage.I have been stuck once and stranded once as well. The stuck was when Ihigh centered my front axle on a log while driving on the beach. A friendwith a Toyauto truck pulled me off of it (never offroad alone) and laughedfor a month everytime he thought about it. The stranding was a few yearsago while driving the fence line on our deer lease and my fuel pump decidednot to work anymore. We towed it back to camp and trailered it back toHouston. I've since deciced in-the-tank electric fuel pumps really suckwhen you're trying to fix them in the field.

used jeep wranglers : I'm pretty sure it can go anywhere. I've not tried everything but it's rocksolid and will climb anything. I'd probably get stuck in deep mud but havenever really like driving in mud anyway.A Jeep's not for everyone. I doubt I'd have one for a primary car if mywife didn't have a nice sedan for those times you need to haul family andsuch and ride in comfort. If I had to drive customers around and make a decent impression I'd consider something different. But, since all I dois drive it to work and back and make occasional offroad ventures I'd not trade it for anything. There's just nothing like a Jeep.I have a 1987 Wrangler which is used as a third car. (and used for plowingduring the winter). It has about 37k on it now, and quite a few of those miles are from plowing and driving on snow covered roads in 4wd. And it goesto the dump every weekend. It needed a new ECU when it was under warranty, and the carb had to be rebuilt once. (I think I might have picked up some bad gas). The ignitionmodule went out last fall. New one was ~$40.

used jeep wranglers : I don't beat it (even when plowing!) and am pretty regular with oil changesevery 2500 to 3000. It always starts and runs great. I would not wantto drive in it more than an hour or so. I don't know if I would buy another, but that is only because I want a bigger plow vehicle.--====================================== ======================================Da vid Teichholtz Kendall Square Research 170 Tracer Lane, (617) 895-9466 Waltham Mass. 02154-1379Women think men will change after marriage. Men think women won't.They're both wrongI've got an '88 wrangler softtop, 4.2 l inline 6, 5 speed gearbox, 3.08:1gears, and it just turned 60K miles. I get 18 mpg commuting and 26 mpgon the highway. It's service history is as follows:oil changes at 3K mile intervalsgearbox/diff/transfer case flush/fill at 30K mile intervalsignition tuneup at 30K milesfront/rear brakes at 60K milesstill running on the original Goodyear Wrangler RadialsThe California emmisions package includes something called a "Deccelerationvalve" that apparently has about a 30K mile lifetime. when it fails, theidle speed is erratic, wavering between 400 and 1000 rpm. It's been a reliable vehicle for me. Offroad use is limited to gravel and/ordirt logging roads in the Euraka/Crescent City area of California, and some infrequent jaunts through snow. I've heard that Wranglers made by Chrysler(as opposed to AMC) tend to be less reliable, but that's only anecdotal.Chrysler took over for the 89 model year.
